Anime Culture

I’m not one who goes to theaters that often. Off the top of my head last year, the only movies I went to see were Jackass Forever and Sonic 2. I’m not too into western superhero stuff so I always felt apathetic towards going to theaters unless it’s with friends.

With that said, I’ve felt the same way with anime movies in theaters as well. I have this thing where I don’t really care too much about “normie” anime, and by that I mean the popular shonen shows of the moment or Ghibli films. I don’t necessarily dislike these, because Naruto is one of my favorite series. I think I just miss the whole “counter culture” aspect of anime that was prevalent (along with video games) during the 2000s.

Another way to put it is, if you were to go to a store like Hot Topic or any places in the US that sells anime merchandise, it’s always the common series you’ll find. I may be a bit late but I don’t remember if Love Live ever took off in the US (at least the first generation) because I’ve never seen merchandise for it anywhere. You’ll usually find popular series at the moment or Ghibli stuff. Maybe I’m just an old fart and slowly becoming the old man who goes “BACK IN MY DAY WE HAD THIS AND THAT.” Not to mention one with a “hipster” attitude.

Going back to theaters, I noticed that TenSura (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) is going to have a film release on the 18th, and I figured I might give it a shot. Always nice to just chill and possibly meet new people.
